You, Me, and the Canopy

We used to climb tall trees,
up to the topmost thin limbs
that reach always
for more life.

We’d hang from our legs,
upside down,
bark biting
the back of our knees.

It used
to be a way
to spend the morning
laughing at the world below.

Now it seems
the type of thing
to make us feel
like prey avoiding capture.
