Listen of the Week: Baauer

Aa by Baauer

While it seems obvious given the length, Aa truly is a blur. With the fever-pitch holding constant throughout, apart from some quick dips into reflective melodrama like “Good & Bad” and “Church Reprise”, you never get the sense that Baauer is trying to waste your time. It’s time well spent, but you’re still hoping, begging in some cases, for more. Given 33 minutes you best not trip, and Baauer does that enough times to hold Aa back from the greatness it often seeps into.

Friday Lyrics Mash: Enter Mr. Sandman

Enter: night

Mr Sandman, bring us a dream
Dreams of dragon’s fire
In your closet, in your head
Sleep with one eye open
Don’t have nobody to call my own
Would be so peachy before we’re too old
It’s just the beasts under your bed
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Dreams of war, dreams of liars
And they aren’t of Snow White
Mr Sandman, bring us, please, please, please
Say your prayers, little one
Gripping your pillow tight
If I die before I wake
Make him the cutest that I’ve ever seen
Take my hand
(Someone to hold)
Please turn on your magic beam
Don’t have nobody to call my own

Exit: light

Make him the cutest that I’ve ever seen
Give him a lonely heart like Pagliacci
And lots of wavy hair like Liberace
Don’t forget, my son
Give him a pair of eyes with a come-hither gleam
To include everyone
Tuck you in, warm within
Pray the Lord my soul to keep
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over
Sleep with one eye open
And of things that will bite
(Yes)
Take my hand
Heavy thoughts tonight
We’re off to never never land
Now I lay me down to sleep
So please turn on your magic beam
Sandman, I’m so alone
Give him two lips like roses and clover
Mr. Sandman bring us a dream
We’re off to never never land

Enter: night

Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Grain of sand
Keep you free from sin
And never mind that noise you heard
Pray the Lord my soul to take
Gripping your pillow tight
Till the Sandman he comes
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Something’s wrong, shut the light
Sandman, I’m so alone
Hush little baby, don’t say a word
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Mr Sandman, someone to hold
We’re off to never never land
Take my hand
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over

Exit: light

Listen of the Week: Desert Mountain Tribe

Either That or the Moon, by Desert Mountain Tribe

Every single one of Either That Or The Moon‘s pieces sounds as if it was created to be heard in stadiums as big as aircraft hangars. Take sensational closer ‘Interstellar’ for instance, a song so grandiose and heartfelt it could stop traffic. At just over nine minutes in total, it doesn’t sell itself short. Yet at the same time, never outstays its welcome either.

Friday Lyrics Mash: I Know What You Did to the Boys of Summer

Hey-ey, I know, I know, I know, I know I know what you did last summer
Ahh, a little voice inside my head said, “Don’t look back you can never look back
I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know I can’t seem to let you go just lie to me – there’s no other I know I wanna know you need it, though I know, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know, I know tell me you didn’t mean it though”
It’s tearing me apart, but I can see you after the boys of summer have gone
Empty lake, empty streets after the boys of summer have gone
I know you didn’t mean it though

I know you didn’t mean it, though I know what you did last summer I know what you did last summer I know what you did last summer – look me in the eyes, my lover, you got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby, I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know tell me where you’ve been

Coming home, coming home
I know what you did last summer
Can’t seem to hold you close
Your brown skin shinin’ in the sun
Those days are gone forever
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong – I never will forget those nights – they don’t seem as bright – you got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby

I’m gonna show you what I’m made of

Remember how you made me crazy?
It’s tearing me apart – tell me where you’ve been lately
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
I know, I know, I know, I know I know I know, I know, I know no more, no more, I know I know, I know, I know I know, I know, I know
Nobody on the road after the boys of summer have gone, nobody on the beach
Tell me where you’ve been lately tell me where you’ve been lately I know what you did last summer – I see you walking real slow and you’re smilin’ at everyone
Look me in the eyes, my lover
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
Remember how I made you scream?

I know what you did last summer I thought I knew what love was – what did I know?

The summer’s out of reach
The sun goes down alone
And she’s slipping away
She’s slipping away
She’s not coming home
