An Uncanny Light

There’s an uncanny light in your eyes tonight, a light that glows icy blue
And that uncanny light in your eyes tonight lets me know that I somehow got through
There’s a razor thin rip across your blood red lips that says you’ve been torn right in two
And that razor thin rip won’t be healing that quick for it’s still got some hurting to do
There’s a loud pounding mess in your weak, frightened chest, a mess that’s forever strewn
And that mess in your chest never knows when to rest or stop singing that sad secret tune

It’s a matter of course, it’s a matter of war, it’s a matter of me loving you
It’s a matter of time, it’s an unpunished crime, it’s the tightening of eternal screws

It’s new, it’s new, it’s new again
We’re free to look away
It’s old, it’s old, it’s old again
We’ve found we never can stay

There’s a whispering gasp like the hiss of an asp that escapes from your quivering mouth
And that whispering gasp incites me to ask if this is what our life’s about
There’s a tear in your eye as you say your goodbyes, a golden tear glistening and ripe
And that ripe, golden tear won’t bear fruit for years though you’ll water it night after night
There’s a space in the house that’s never been figured out, a space that carries your name
And that space holds your face forever in place, a shadow left hungering for flame.

It’s a a very cold war, this meandering course, it’s a matter of me loving you
It’s a victim-less crime, it’s about goddamn time, the last thing I’d expect you to do

It’s new, it’s new, it’s new again
We’re free now to look away
It’s old, it’s old, it’s old again
We’ve found out we never can stay

It’s old, it’s old, it’s old again
We’ve found out we never can stay
It’s new, it’s new, it’s new again
We’re free to throw it away
We’re free now to throw it away
Yes, we’re all free to throw it away
