XIV – On Days Slipping By

Should you ever find yourself
In the most fortunate position
Of riding in a glass elevator
Please take a brief moment
To attempt this experiment:

Take the elevator up to the top
Push the button for the bottom floor
Place your head against the glass
Focus on the scene below
The ground rushing up to meet you

Hold your breath
Or inhale slow and deep
Consider the descent

The rising feeling
In the pit
Of your gut,

The effortlessness
Of the fall

The smoothness
Of it all,

Now:

Try to stop
That elevator
From its fall,

Using nothing
But the power
Of your mind.

It won’t work
Give it a shot
Nevertheless

Now try again,
But this time
Close your eyes…

  1. Love it. Such a powerful visual image. First few lines reminded me of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Then as I read through, I could imagine being in the elevators of the CN Tower in Toronto with the glass floor.

      1. Well, well, I tried it this morning as I was descending to use the gym, it started out as fun, until my eyes started rolling in its sockets and I felt some surge of a rush 🙂 will do so again on a day that I feel like having a cheap lightheaded experience.

  3. A brilliant metaphor for inevitability, and how closing one’s eyes to it changes nothing.

At least, as I haven’t tried it yet, that’s what I get from it. 🙂

I wonder, what will I discover when I do try it? Hmmmm….

  5. Beautiful! Love the imagery and how it made me feel like I was there. I’m new here and I don’t really understand how everything works on here. I also write poetry and would like to follow people but don’t know how. Also I have no idea how people will ever find my page.
