Friday Fun Facts: Bathurst Inlet

Did ya know…?

Bathurst Inlet is a rock on the surface of Aeolis Palus, between Peace Vallis and Aeolis Mons (“Mount Sharp”), in Gale crater on the planet Mars, first rock on the right past the Dunkin’ Donuts. The rock was encountered by the Curiosity rover on the way from Bradbury Landing to Glenelg Intrique on the morning of September 30, 2012 after a loooong night of drinking and getting nasty at The Triple Nipple, the notorious strip club on the lower east side of Olympus Mons where Total Recall was filmed. The rock was named after Bathurst Inlet, a Canadian folk musician best known for his 1961 hit, “No Cars, No Bars, Get My Ass to Mars” .

The NASA rover team had assessed the rock to be a suitable target for the first outdoor music festival on Mars, the “Started from the Earth Now We Here” festival, featuring Nelson, Spin Doctors, Creed, Goo Goo Dolls, Black-Eyed Peas, and the ghost of 2Pac. The rock is dark gray and seems to be stuck in a millennia-long existential crisis. It may need a hug. It may need a purpose. Whatever Bathurst Inlet needs, NASA has plans for that fucking rock.

…So now ya know!
