Way Back Whensday

What we were listening to…

5 years ago:

(Wish I could’ve found a video for Materialist)

10 years ago:

(And incidentally, this band gets my vote for one of the best bands ever.)

20 years ago:

(No real video, alas. 🙁 )
(For shits and giggles – go to youtube and see 10 years ago band performing live their song of the same name as 20 years ago song.)

What we’re listening to today and probably for the next week straight is the new Underworld…oh JOY!

  1. Sigh. I miss Darren Emerson. Their sound always evolved with each new album. Kind of like Orbital was for a while, or Goo Goo Dolls, for that matter. You never know how any of them is going to sound when they crawl out of the cave to grace us with more tunage, but it’s usually good. Still, after Everything, Everything, it’s just not quite living up to expectations. Not bad, per-se. Just doesn’t quite live up to the name.

On my third listen to the Underworld all the way through. I hate saying this…but I
just can’t get into it. It’s kinda boring. There’s no progress, it sounds like
1997. And, some of the lyrics, are embarrasingly bad. And with those Riverrun Mixes
they did floating around out there…this album doesn’t compare to any of those, you
think? “Ring Road” is good, except, it’s “Bruce Lee” with different lyrics. Like Noah
said, it’s not bad…but losing Emerson I think has effected their ability to make tracks
that build drama like they use to. Maybe it was his DJ asthetic that gave them that
uncanny ability to create tracks with tension and drama. On a positive note though I think it’s
much, much better than 100 Days Off. Ok, now I’m liking “Glam Bucket” too.

  3. yeah, i had my first full listen today. less than impressive – especially after the promise of The Riverrun Project stuff. {sigh}
there is one track that is just deplorable lyrically. i don’t know the name, but good god, just terrible lyrics and delivery.

Yeah, I think there are about three tracks with cringe inducing lyrics. I hate to rip artists for their lyrics cause it’s hard to write I’m sure….but holy crap they’re bad. Real bad. And not only that, they come at horrible times…like just when you hear a couple tracks that are pretty good, something awful comes along to make you forget about the good parts of the album.
