Lee’s Summit residents beware — authorities have found a rabid bat inside the city.

An animal-control officer recovered the injured mammal last week in the 3700 block of Northeast Grant Street. Jackson County Health Department officials confirmed Wednesday that the bat tested positive for rabies. No other human or pet contact has been connected to the bat.

Kansas City health officials recently sent out a warning after a two rabid bats were found in homes.

Health officials suggest that pet owners make sure their animals’ rabies vaccinations are up-to-date.

All area residents should avoid handling bats or other animals that appear to be ill or behaving abnormally. Bats that are active during the day or are unable to fly are more likely to be rabid.
